I’d like to start by saying that I’m not surprised that these two supplements have become very popular. In recent years, Americans have become more health conscious, but at the same time they’re wary of diet pills and the potential side effects that these might contain.
So they turn to nature, which is the right thing to do since it’s safer. But what exactly is it about these two supplements that make them more popular than the other stuff? The answer is there’s plenty of scientific evidence to prove that garcinia cambogia (GC) as well as green coffee bean (GCB) extract does work.

First of all I would like to stress that both supplements work very well, but they do so differently. Here’s a brief explanation of how these supplements burn fat as well as the evidence supporting them.
A Closer Look At Green Coffee
The active ingredient here is Chlorogenic acid, and this more than anything other is responsible for burning fat in your body. According to research, Chlorogenic acid works by slowing the amount of glucose that your liver puts in your bloodstream.
If there’s not enough glucose in your bloodstream, your body is left with no choice but to tap into the stored fat and use it as energy, and this of course leads to weight loss. There are a growing number of studies proving that coffee bean supplements are effective, including one study done by Dr. Joe A Vinson. In this rigidly controlled, double blind, placebo trial, the participants that availed of the lost several more pounds compared to those that used placebo.
Another study was done by Dr. Oz with 100 women participating, and half of which were given the extract of the raw coffee and the other half placebo. None of them were asked to change their diet, but after a couple of weeks those who took the natural coffee extract lost more pounds than those that took placebo, leading credence to the earlier studies.
The best part about these studies is healthy participants reported no side effects, and by just taking three 400 mg 45% Chlorogenic acid tablets a day they started losing weight.
A Closer Look At Garcinia Cambogia
Reviews of naturally extracted garcinia have been very positive, and the key to weight loss is hydroxycitric acid or HCA. HCA is similar to the Chlorogenic acid in that it suppresses your appetite, but it burns fat differently.
Researchers are not yet entirely sure how it works, but essentially what it does is increase the serotonin in your brain, the chemical that tells your body to stop eating. I would also like to point out that serotonin is the same chemical that keeps people from emotional eating binges, so higher levels are great.
But that’s not all that HCA does, because it also keeps the enzyme citrate lyase from being released. This is the enzyme that turns food carbohydrate into fat, which is one of the reasons why you get fat.
But since HCA inhibits this enzyme, your body’s ability to store fat is slowed down, and the remaining fat cells will be used as energy.
Garcinia Cambogia – The Evidence
Like the raw coffee, there’s scientific evidence that GC is essential for weight loss. One of these studies was done at Purdue University and the results are impressive to say the least.
The subjects were given 400 mg doses of GC half an hour before meals, and after 12 weeks each participant had lost more than 8 lbs. And the best part about this is the participants didn’t even need to do more exercise or go on a crash diet.
I also found out that Georgetown University also did an 8 week study wherein the participants lost 5.4% of their body weight. In both studies, the participants were given 60% HCA, so you need to make sure that the supplement you take has that amount. As for the dose, 800 mg to 1000 mg will be necessary.
As far as side effects go, none has been reported so far, and that’s not really surprising because this is a natural product. However if you’re taking any kind of medication for a medical condition, ask your doctor first, and you should do the same with green coffee beans.
Can I Take The Two Extracts Together?
The study done by Dr. Hanslow shows that there’s nothing wrong when taking these supplements together before meals. On their own, each supplement should work out fine, but if you want to try both there’s nothing wrong with it either.
By trying both, you’ll be able to determine which one works best for you. Take 1 x 400 mg raw coffee bean capsule half an hour twice a day before meals for a week, and then do the same with 1 x 1000 mg of garcinia. But defer to the instructions on each bottle when in doubt.
